BIOGRAPHY

Salma Khan is Vice President & Chief of Staff at GreatSchools, a national nonprofit organization that provides school information, data and ratings to over 45 million families through its website and partners. In this role, Salma drives organizational efficiencies in alignment with GreatSchools’ equity and inclusion values to enable the organization to sustainably generate more impact toward its mission.

Previously, Salma served as Senior Director of Community Engagement and Advocacy at Elevate 215, where she oversaw GreatPhillySchools, a local school finder website with over 350,000 users annually, in addition to leading the GTM strategy and execution of ApplyPhillyCharter, a unified charter application website.

Salma was the Director of External Affairs at KIPP Philadelphia Public Schools, where her portfolio included advocacy, governance, and parent and community engagement. With her leadership, KIPP Philadelphia received new charter approvals for three consecutive years -- the only charter network in Philadelphia to have done so -- allowing the network to grow from four to ten schools.

Earlier in her career, Salma served as the Director of the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, overseeing the administration and expansion of the first federally-funded school voucher program. She also worked in the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Innovation and Improvement, the agency’s entrepreneurial arm that makes strategic investments in innovative educational programs and practices.

Salma earned her bachelor’s degree from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and master’s degree from the University of Southern California (USC). She currently resides in Southern California with her husband and two children.
