BIOGRAPHY

Shawn Ar valo McCollough is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence in Washington, DC. As a former three-time school district superintendent, principal, and teacher, Ar valo McCollough's experiences have helped him refocus the American Board on helping high poverty and minority communities. Specifically, he is leading the national effort to recruit and train professionals to change careers and become teachers for their own neighborhood schools. Prior to the American Board, as the Superintendent of Nogales Unified Schools - a Hispanic (98%) district located on the Arizona and Mexican Border, Ar valo McCollough made organizational reform the top priority by restructuring district operations and establishing ambitious strategic goals. With a simple recipe of hard work, accountability, and no excuses, Ar valo McCollough was able to slash millions in wasteful spending but, at the same time, he increased test scores across 90% of the entire school district. Ar valo McCollough is widely regarded as an expert at turning around At-Risk Schools, has been honored with a number of national awards, and featured in The New York Times, USA Today, ABC World News Tonight, CNN, Fox News Network, PBS, National Public Radio, and American School Board Journal. In fact, US Secretary Arne Duncan recently called him 'the next generation of leadership who is going to help lead the country where we need to go.'
