The school is named for Dr. Euphemia Lofton Haynes, the first African-American woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics and a DC Public School (DCPS) teacher for nearly 50 years. Before E.L. She began her career as a high-performing middle school math and science teacher in Baltimore, Maryland. She was also an education researcher at the RAND Corporation.
