BIOGRAPHY
Jack Carey is the founder and Executive Director of Live Oak Camp. Jack's lifelong interest in the outdoors led him to study Natural Resources and Environmental Studies in college, but his career plans changed after working a campus job for Teach For America. He began his career as a 5th and 6th grade teacher in the South Bronx (NYC 04), before spending the next decade at Teach For America, Teach For All, and the KIPP Foundation.
In 2008, Jack and his wife Jenny— now a 17-year veteran of KIPP New Orleans Schools —moved to New Orleans. Driven by a desire to see young people from different backgrounds connect, Jack recruited a team of educators to launch Live Oak Camp in 2014. As a first-of-its-kind model, Live Oak brings together diverse, values-aligned youth at sleepaway camp, and then invests in their leadership development all year round. Since 2016, Jack has led Live Oak full-time, scaling its impact to serve thousands of students from hundreds of schools across New Orleans, building a powerful network and community of the city’s future leaders.
Jack and Jenny reside in New Orleans with their children Eddie (13) and Frances (10).
