BIOGRAPHY

Marcus Harden is a lifelong student of love, legacy, and liberation—and a systems-minded leader committed to transforming education in service of equity and belonging. An educator, mentor, and storyteller, he brings more than two decades of experience advancing opportunity for young people and communities historically pushed to the margins, particularly young men of color.

Born and raised in South Seattle (Rainier Beach Vikings—the Crown Jewel of the South End), Marcus learned early that leadership is forged in community. He saw history and wisdom alive in barbershops, classrooms, faith spaces, and neighborhood kitchens—long before encountering them in textbooks. That grounding shaped his leadership philosophy: center community voice, honor lived experience, and build systems that reflect the dignity and brilliance of those they serve.

In 2018, Marcus founded Black History Today, a movement-turned-exhibit uplifting unsung Black leaders and reframing whose stories are valued. His professional journey spans roles as teacher, principal, Chief Academic Officer, and nonprofit executive, consistently working at the intersection of policy, practice, and people to drive meaningful, sustainable change.

Marcus co-founded the Academy for Creating Excellence to affirm the genius of young men of color, played a key role in shaping Washington State’s public charter school ecosystem, and led educational and cultural strategy for Overtime Elite, an innovative professional basketball league focused on holistic youth development.

A proud University of Washington graduate, Marcus is a devoted uncle and father figure to six young men and a mentor to many more. He also enjoys bowling, karaoke, pro wrestling and may or may not be Batman.
