BIOGRAPHY

Xochitl Avellán currently serves as an area superintendent at Green Dot Public Schools in Los Angeles, California, where she oversees multiple secondary schools and coaches principals and assistant principals across all aspects of school leadership, including instructional practice, school culture, operations, budget, compliance, and restorative discipline. She also coordinates and manages Green Dot’s Clear Administrative Services Credential Program, accredited by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), which was founded under her leadership and has supported the development of more than 40 school administrators.
Prior to her current role, Xochitl served as director of the Administrators-in-Residence Program at Green Dot Public Schools, where she secured CTC accreditation for the preliminary administrator credential program. Earlier in her career, she was principal of Animo Ralph Bunche Charter High School, assistant principal at Animo Justice Charter High School, a secondary literacy coach, and an English and math teacher at the middle school level in Los Angeles.
With 28 years of experience in education, Xochitl is deeply committed to cultivating instructional leadership, strengthening school culture, and advancing equity. Her work is shaped by her immigrant journey from Nicaragua following the civil war, which fuels her dedication to serving historically underserved communities. She earned a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Policy from California State University, Northridge and a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of California, Berkeley. Xochitl was awarded Principal of the Year (2014) and holds National Board Certification.
