BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Matthew M. Tyson is an educational leader based in Atlanta who began his career as a special education teacher and currently serves as the CEO of Tapestry Public Charter Schools, an inclusive charter school system where each school has an equal population of neurotypical students and those with special needs. Dr. Tyson is a passionate advocate for educational equity and providing authentic opportunities for student voice in educational programming. Dr. Tyson earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from SUNY Oneonta in New York and both his master’s in education and a doctorate in educational leadership from Georgia State University.

Dr. Tyson was an early proponent of artificial intelligence in the classroom and has been utilizing adaptive, AI-driven programming since 2012 as a way to help increase the individualization of the student experience. His work on the impact of AI on educational leadership was published in the Journal of Educational Leadership in 2021 and has since gone on to become one of the most-widely cited studies in the field. Dr. Tyson was selected as a David L. Clark Scholar in 2020 for his contributions to educational research by the American Educational Research Association and he has presented at numerous education conferences across the nation. Dr. Tyson is a 2023 Georgia State University 40 Under 40 Award recipient and has helped lead his school to achieve awards such as Georgia Charter School of the Year and a Building Hope Impact Award for Student Empowerment. Dr. Tyson is devoted to expanding access to school choice for all families and creating innovative, student-centered educational environments.
